The trouble with brain scans

Neuroscientists have long been banging their heads on their desks over exaggerated reports of brain scanning studies. Media stories illustrated with coloured scans, supposedly showing how the brain works, are now a standard part of the science pages and some people find them so convincing that they are touted as ways of designing education for our children, evaluating the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and testing potential recruits. Recently, to the chagrin of French scientists, politicians called for neuro-imaging to be used in the courts to decide on the guilt of criminals, after the technology made its dubious debut in the legal systems of India, Italy and the US.

Demystifying the Akasha :: Consciousness and the Quantum Vacuum -

Mathematical models for consciousness by Ralph Abraham , the pope of Chaos Theory and visual maths

We humans long to be connected with our origins, so we create rituals. Science is another way to express this longing. It also connects us with our origins, and it too has its rituals and its commandments. Its only sacred truth is that there are no sacred truths. All assumptions must be critically examined. Arguments from authority are worthless. Whatever is inconsistent with the facts, no matter how fond of it we are, must be discarded or revised. Science is not perfect, it’s often misused, it’s only a tool, but it’s the best tool we have. Self-correcting, ever-changing, applicable to everything. With this tool we vanquish the impossible. With the methods of science we have begun to explore the cosmos. - Carl Sagan

Tripwire is a kinetic installation by the French visual artist Jean-Michel Albert and American composer Ashley Fure. A vertical set of 1 elastic strings is set into an undulating motion, creating a wall of geometrical apparitions in constant flux. Visitors passing along the structure are tracked via infrared sensors at the base of the installation, their presence affecting the preprogrammed waveforms.

Chinese Physicists Teleport Photons Over 100 Kilometers

Teleportation, sci-fi-y as it sounds, is actually not fictional or even new; two years ago, Chinese physicists broke the then-current record for quantum teleportation by teleporting photons over 10 miles. But a new effort from that same team demolishes that record, beaming the photons over 97 kilometers.

A Data Visualization Maps 250 Years of Human Expansion Across the Planet

This fascinating visualization, commissioned by the Planet Under Pressure conference, illustrates the age of human influence over the Earth’s ecosystems known as the anthropocene. Since the industrial revolution, technological innovation has accelerated, the population has spiked, and the environment has felt the impact of this boom. Owen Gaffney and Félix Pharand-Deschênes, who created the video, drew on global data from NASA, NOAA, Greg’s Cable Map, NaturalEarthData, and other sources, and used dramatic narration to advance the initiative’s environmental message. Watch the video full screen in HD to appreciate its detail
